Discovery of a bright eclipsing cataclysmic variable

چکیده
Aims. We report on the discovery of J0644+3344, a bright deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) binary. Methods. Optical photometric and spectroscopic observations were obtained to determine the nature and characteristics of this CV. Results. Spectral signatures of both binary components and an accretion disk can be seen at optical wavelengths. The optical spectrum shows broad H I, He I, and He II accretion disk emission lines with deep narrow absorption components from H I, He I, Mg II and Ca II. The absorption lines are seen throughout the orbital period, disappearing only during primary eclipse. These absorption lines are either the the result of an optically-thick inner accretion disk or from the photosphere of the primary star. Radial velocity measurements show that the H I, He I, and Mg II absorption lines phase with the the primary star, while weak absorption features in the continuum, between Hα and Hβ, phase with the secondary star. Radial velocity solutions give a 150±4 km s−1 semi-amplitude for the primary star and 192.8±5.6 km s−1 for the secondary, resulting in a primary to secondary mass ratio of q=1.285. The individual stellar masses are 0.63−0.69 M⊙ for the primary and 0.49−0.54 M⊙ for the secondary, with the uncertainty largely due to the inclination. Conclusions. The bright eclipsing nature of this binary has helped provide masses for both components with an accuracy rarely achieved for cataclysmic variables. This binary most closely resembles a nova-like UX UMa or SW Sex type of cataclysmic variable. J0644+3344, however, has a longer orbital period than most UX UMa or SW Sex stars. Assuming an evolution toward shorter orbital periods, J0644+3344 is therefore likely to be a young interacting binary. The secondary star is consistent with the size and spectral type of a K8 star, but has the mass of a M0.

X-ray Variability of the Magnetic Cataclysmic Variable V1432 Aql
V1432 Aquilae (=RX J1940.2−1025) is the X-ray bright, eclipsing magnetic cataclysmic variable ∼37 away from the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 6814. Due to a 0.3% difference between the orbital (12116.3 s) and the spin (12150 s) periods, the accretion geometry changes over the ∼50 day beat period. Here we report the results of an RXTE campaign to observe the eclipse 25 times, as well as Also Universities ...
متن کاملThe serendipituous discovery of a short-period eclipsing polar in 2XMMp
We report the serendipituous discovery of the new eclipsing polar 2XMMp J131223.4+173659. Its striking X-ray light curve attracted immediate interest when we were visually inspecting the source products of the 2XMMp catalogue. This light curve revealed its likely nature as a magnetic cataclysmic variable of AM Herculis (or polar) type with an orbital period of ∼ 92 min, which was confirmed by f...
متن کاملHST/FOS Eclipse Observations of the Nova-like Cataclysmic Variable UX Ursae Majoris
We present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope observations of the eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variable UX UMa obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph. Two eclipses each were observed with the G160L grating (covering the ultraviolet waveband) in August of 1994 and with the PRISM (covering the near-ultraviolet to near-infrared) in November of the same year. The system was ∼50% brighter in...
متن کاملRX J 1643 . 7 + 3402 : a new bright cataclysmic variable ?
We report the discovery of a new bright (V∼12.6) cataclysmic variable star identified with the ROSAT X-ray source RX J1643.7+3402. Spectroscopic and photometric observations show it to be a novalike variable sharing some of the characteristics of the SW Sex sub-class of novalike CVs. The spectroscopic period may be either 2. 575 or 2. 885, within the period “gap.” A photometric modulation with ...
متن کاملThe eclipsing Cataclysmic Variable GS Pavonis : Evidence for disk radius changes ⋆
We have obtained differential time series photometry of the cataclysmic variable GS Pavonis over a timespan of 2 years. These show that this system is deeply eclipsing (∼2– 3.5 mag) with an orbital period of 3.72 hr. The eclipse depth and out-of-eclipse light levels are correlated. From this correlation we deduce that the disk radius is changing and that the eclipses in the low state are total....
